English Vocabulary Module 2 - Antonyms

Antonyms - Words that give an opposite meaning to a given word are called antonyms.

Examples:
Poignant - jubilant, joyous

Here, poignant means 'sad'. On the contrary, 'jubilant' and 'joyous' refer to happy.

Antonyms of nouns

1. luck - misfortune, mishap
2. happiness - sadness, gloom, misery
3. grief - ecstasy, euphoria
4. honesty - dishonesty, insincerity
5. weakness - strength, power 
6. difficulty - ease, simplicity
7. authenticity - inaccuracy, imprecision 
8. beauty - ugliness, unpleasantness
9. presence - absence, sabbatical
10. optimism - pessimism, gloom
 
Antonyms of verbs
 
1. disintegrate - synthesize, combine
2. construct - demolish, destroy
3. diminish - increase, grow
4. integrate - disorganize, mismatch
5. encourage - discourage, demotivate
6. triumph - lose, fail
7. enforce - cease, terminate
8. prohibit - allow, approve
9. succeed - precede, antecede
10. promote - demote, relegate 

Antonyms of adjectives
 
1. elegant - inelegant, awkward
2. enormous - tiny, small
3. glorious - horrid, miserable 
4. humorous - tragic, serious
5. implausible - possible, attainable
6. gregarious - unsociable, reserved
7. brutal - gentle, humane
8. appealing - unappealing, unattractive
9. shrill - soft, dulcet
10. awful - wonderful, excellent
